In the late 1970s I was fortunate enough to be invited to identify Aalenian and Bajocian ammonites, which had come to light during the drilling of, the then, Instiute of Geological Sciences' boreholes, some of which were done in association with the Gas Council and were related to the then significant hunt for hydrocarbons in the British off-shore waters. This is particularly true of the Lyme Bay borehole (see below). The latter, together with the Winterborne Kingston, appear to be the only ones subsequently published. I felt rather exploited by the IGS in these matters. The first borehole I had any contact with was the Lyme Bay one. I had been paid £20 to identify the ammonites, a fairly meagre sum compared to what IGS charged the Gas Council for their services. To rub salt in the wound, my name in the authorship disappeared between the original manuscript proofs and the final published work. I will leave it to the reader to analyze how much of IGS Report 79/3, pp. 1-6 is based on my report given here! I feel I was only paid to identify the ammonites, which I did on the printed logs provided. The report, which I eventually provided gratis, thus retains my own personal copyright. It is for this reason that I feel entitled to publish this material here. The type written documents have been scanned in via a Mustek A3:USB scanner and OCR'd via ABBYY Finereader 4.
- PDF Copy of my previously unpublished report on the Aalenian-Bajocian ammonites from the Seabarn Farm borehole (SY626805), 1979, recording the thickest sequence of garantiana zone rocks in Britain, if not Europe ( + 40m).
- PDF Copy of my previously unpublished report on the Aalenian-Bajocian material, from the Winterborne Kingston borehole, 1977. Which formed the basis for much of the Inferior Oolite section of Penn, I. E. 1981, Middle Jurassic stratigraphy and correlation of the Winterborne Kingstone borehole, Dorset, pp, 53-76, I.G.S. Report 81/3.
